Make-up in the image session
fine feathers…
There comes a time in everyone’s life when it turns out that we need new business photos on LinkedIn or a company website. Maybe we are starting a new stage in our life, we are looking for new challenges, a new job? We want to show our best side. Photography on the website, business portal and CV should show us as professional and competent people, emanating strength and confidence. It is worth asking yourself then – what steps should be taken so that the photography shows that we are the right person in the right place? In addition to choosing a photographer, it is also worth considering our image – as the saying goes: “fine feathers make fine birds”. Properly selected outfit, hairstyle and make-up will certainly be helpful in creating a professional image.
When looking at business photos, the first thing we look at is the face of the model. Facial expressions and eye contact are very important, so here we focus on makeup. Make-up which we use in the image session combines the features of business and photography make-up. Before revealing what, in my opinion, is the most important in this type of beautification, I want to briefly present the features of both these forms.
What is photo makeup? First of all, we place emphasis on proper matting and even skin tone. The reason is the specific lighting used during the session. In addition, our skin is not always in perfect condition. The use of a highlighter, so beneficial in real life, can give the impression of a sweaty, tired face in the photo. Adequate tricks used by make-up artists are enough to make the face look refreshed and radiant. The intensity of make-up should be adjusted to the studio lighting as it fades the colours out. Therefore, photographic makeup will be more intense than everyday makeup.
What is the first association when we think of business makeup? Red lipstick, of course. It is such a timeless power make-up that gives us self-confidence and makes all eyes look at us. A shade of red well matched to our type of beauty is a great colour accent, enlivening our toned down business outfits. It comes to the fore and draws attention to the lips. So it’s worth using it live when we need to make a speech or make a presentation. Having the audience focused on what we have to say is guaranteed. But is this effect what we have in mind when we think about a professional business photo? After all, we don’t want to hide behind makeup. The subject of the photo is our model and it is this person who should catch the eye, not the makeup. We must also remember that despite the desire to look as best as possible, business makeup is a type of day makeup. That is why moderation rules here. It does not work well with glitters, a ton of highlighter or juicy, sparkling colours. We leave these for the evening. In business make-up, we rather emphasize our beauty. We use subtle colours of brown, beige, gravy, and colour accents are really just accents.
We already know what photo makeup is all about and what to look for in business makeup‘. It is important to skilfully combine the features of both, and at the same time not to lose the individuality of the photographed person. A woman who wears expressive makeup on a daily basis may feel uncomfortable in light makeup. And vice versa. A person who prefers delicate makeup will feel uncomfortable in a strong version. And it will be visible in the lens, which is what we want to avoid. These rules are very important, but each person must be approached individually. It all depends on what message we want to convey with the photo – show our professionalism and leadership attributes or maybe creativity and originality. A well-suitedmakeup is important and a professional make-up artist will certainly help us.
